Two young girls received only minor injuries after being hit by a minivan while skateboarding in Brantford’s south end Monday morning. Kelly Harley was inside her home around 8:30 a.m., when the crash occurred. She heard the noise and ventured outside to see what had happened at the corner of Dorothy and Division streets. “I could see that there was a body laying underneath the van,” she says. Const. Justin Zabolotney of the Brantford Police Service was the first emergency responder to arrive at the scene. “As soon as I got on scene, I saw one young female laying in the middle of the road. I jumped out of my car and went to see her,” he tells CTV News. A number of other people had already stopped at the intersection to see what was going on and if they could help, and quickly alerted Zabolotney to the second girl, who was trapped underneath the minivan. “Her entire body was under the vehicle, pretty much right under the centre of the vehicle,” he says. “There was one male underneath the front of the van trying to help her, talk to her, keep her calm. Three or four of us grabbed the one corner of the van, lifted it, and the other male was able to pull her to safety.” Paramedics arrived moments later and took both girls to hospital. Police say they continue to investigate.
