Canadian Blood Services reports a "noticeable increase in blood donation" since its recent appeal for donors, but the inventory still falls short.

The agency made an appeal for donations last week , because its blood supply was at a six-year low, with just three days’ inventory in the major blood groups. The agency hopes to keep a five- to eight-day supply on hand.

CBS reported Wednesday that many Canadians heeded the appeal, marked by an increase in donations, but it hasn’t been enough.

"While we have seen a great response from Canadians, the need for more blood donations continues," CBS vice president Mark Donnison said in a statement.

CBS blamed the shortage on "extremely low attendance" at clinics combined with constant demand for blood products.

According to the statement released Wednesday, the need remains high heading into the Thanksgiving long weekend because people are typically unable to donate over the holiday, while demand remains constant.

Donnison suggests Canadians who want to donate blood make an appointment. Clinic locations and hours are available online.

Appointments can also be made online, via the GiveBlood app, or by calling CBS toll-free at 1-888-2-DONATE(36-6283)
