Heinz Canada recalls baby food due to 'packaging defect'

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Sunday that Heinz Canada is recalling six baby food products due to a packaging defect that may allow for the entry of “spoilage microorganisms.” (CFIA)

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says that Heinz Canada is voluntarily recalling six baby food products due to a packaging defect that may allow for the entry of “spoilage microorganisms.”

The food safety watchdog says consumer shouldn’t consume the products if they have them in their home.

The affected products are: Peas zucchini spinach; Sweet baby vegetables; Beef bolognese with vegetables; Beef butternut squash rice spinach; Tuna sweet corn chowder; Butternut squash apricot peas couscous.

All of the affected products come in 128-ml squeeze pouches.

The CFIA said in a press release on Monday morning that Health Canada has conducted a health risk assessment and has determined that the risk associated with the consumption of the products is “very low to remote.”

The warning was trigged by a consumer complaint, the CFIA said in a statement. There have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of the products. The CFIA warns that if spoiled food is consumed, consumers should watch for symptoms that may include upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea.
