GUELPH - A 27-year-old woman from Guelph, Ont., who admitted to killing her two infant sons, has been convicted of infanticide.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Cas Herold rendered the verdict today against the woman who admitted killing her seven-week-old son in 1998 and her nine-week-old son in 2002.

She was originally charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

However, the judge found that her mind was `disturbed' by the effects of childbirth, which fits the legal definition of the lesser charge of infanticide.

An infanticide conviction carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, while first-degree murder carries a life sentence.

The woman - who cannot be identified because she was 17 at the time of her first son's death - had pleaded not guilty to the murder charges.
