OTTAWA - The federal government is looking to abandon ownership of almost all its lighthouses across Canada.

That includes the beacon at Peggy's Cove, arguably the most photographed tourist attraction in Nova Scotia.

According to the federal Fisheries Department website, Ottawa is trying to divest itself of almost one-thousand lighthouses.

The exceptions are the few manned lighthouses on the east and west coasts.

The website says anyone interest in taking over one and having it declared a heritage property has a two-year deadline.

Over the years, Ottawa has slowly decommissioned lighthouses, many of which have been taken over by community groups.

The Nova Scotia Tourism is talking with the federal government about acquiring the one at Peggy's Cove.
