MONTREAL - A former elementary teacher from an elite Montreal prep school will serve at least 13 years in a Virginia jail for sex crimes involving children.

Richard Doucet pleaded guilty in May to eight charges, including reproducing and distributing child pornography, attempting to take indecent liberties with a child and soliciting a minor for sexual activities.

Stafford County court clerk Dawn Perry says the 37-year-old Doucet was sentenced today to 14 years in prison.

Perry says Doucet must spend 13 years behind bars, but could be released early in the final year of his sentence for good behaviour.

Virginia police arrested Doucet in May 2008 at a hotel, where he was expecting to meet a teenager.

A police detective acting online as a 13-year-old boy alleges he had many sexually explicit web chats with Doucet over several months leading up to the arrest.

Doucet also faces related legal hurdles in two other Virginia courts.

He pleaded guilty to 25 counts of possessing child porn in Fredericksburg and will be sentenced there Aug. 14.

Doucet is also scheduled to appear next month in Prince William County, where he faces nine related charges.

Officials at the Selwyn House school where Doucet taught say he never interfered with any students at the all-boys institution.
