VANCOUVER -- Former Scotiabank Giller Prize winner Joseph Boyden headlines the long list for the 2013 edition of the prize.
Boyden has been nominated for the $50,000 award for his novel "The Orenda" (Hamish Hamilton Canada).
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Giller Prize, created by businessman Jack Rabinovitch in memory of his wife, literary journalist Doris Giller.
This year's jurors are former Giller winner Esi Edugyan, CanLit legend Margaret Atwood and American author Jonathan Lethem.
In addition to Boyden, David Gilmour is in the running for his novel "Extraordinary" (Patrick Crean Editions), Lynn Coady is up for the short story colllection "Hellgoing" (House of Anansi Press) and Craig Davidson is a contender for his novel "Cataract City" (Doubleday Canada).
The 13 longlisted titles were chosen from a field of 147 books, submitted by 61 publishers.
The short list will be announced Oct. 8 while the winner will be unveiled at a Nov. 5 gala.
Rounding out the list are: Dennis Bock for his novel "Going Home Again" (HarperCollins Canada); Elisabeth De Mariaffi for her short story collection "How To Get Along With Women" (Invisible Publishing); Wayne Grady for his novel "Emancipation Day" (Doubleday Canada); Louis Hamelin for his novel "October 1970" (translated by Grady and published by House of Anansi Press); Wayne Johnston for his novel "The Son of a Certain Woman" (Knopf Canada); Claire Messud for her novel "The Woman Upstairs" (Knopf Canada); Lisa Moore for her novel Caught (House of Anansi Press); Dan Vyleta for his novel "The Crooked Maid" (HarperCollins Canada) and Michael Winter for his novel "Minister Without Portfolio" (Hamish Hamilton Canada).
