In his first public statement since the sudden death of his husband and business partner Chris Hyndman, designer and TV host Steven Sabados says his heart is broken.

Hyndman, 49, was found dead in an alleyway outside the couple's Toronto residence on Monday night. His cause of death has not been revealed, but police have said there is no criminal investigation underway.

In a message on the Facebook page for the "Steven and Chris" TV show, Sabados says Hyndman will always be cherished.

"From the moment I met Christopher, we went forward in life, side by side and shoulder to shoulder. He was my best friend, my confidante, my partner, my one love," the message reads

"Over 27 years, we built a beautiful life together; always remembered, always cherished."

Sabados said he and Hyndman's family and friends take comfort in knowing "his generous, larger-than-life spirit lives on."

Sabados gave no further details on the circumstances of Hyndman's death, asking instead for privacy.

"As we find our way through this difficult time, we are asking for privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”

Hyndman and Sabados' long-running CBC talk show "Steven and Chris" has now been suspended. A memorial has been set up at CBC's Toronto headquarters, where fans are leaving messages in a book of condolences.

No plans for a funeral have been announced. CBC says it is planning a celebration of Hyndman's life at a later date.
