CAIRO, Egypt - An Egyptian judge has adjourned the trial of 16 Americans and 27 other employees of non-profit groups accused of fomenting unrest, minutes after the proceedings resumed in Cairo.

None of the American defendants were in court Thursday and only 14 of the 16 charged Egyptians attended.

Judge Makram Awad ordered the prosecutors to ensure that all defendants attend the next hearing, set for April 10.

The case has plunged U.S.-Egyptian relations to their lowest point in 30 years and led to American threats to cut off $1.5 billion in aid to Egypt.

The crisis eased when Egypt lifted a travel ban on the American defendants but the move triggered a political storm within the country, with the ruling generals accused of succumbing to U.S. pressure and interfering in the work of the judiciary.
