Here’s a look at some of the weather stories making headlines around the world this past week. Flooding in California An atmospheric river brought heavy rain over wildfire burn scars in California this past week, prompting flood watches and evacuations. More than 10 centimetres of rain hit parts of the south coast and higher ground received about 20 centimetres of rain. That rain resulted in flash flooding and mudslides in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena areas. Three people were killed in the flooding: a 71-year-old man died when his vehicle was swept off a flooded bridge, and a father and daughter died after being swept into the ocean. Storm Claudia Storm Claudia battered parts of Europe, including the town of Monmouth in Wales. That region suffered it’s most severe flooding in decades as heavy rain caused the river through Monmouth to spill over it’s banks. About 12 centimetres of rain fell in a span of just a few hours. That forced emergency services into rescue and evacuation operations. The storm system prompted dozens of flood warning across Wales and England. Flooding in Italy Flooding also hit northeast Italy this past week. Heavy rain submerged a number of small villages in the region and dozens of residents trapped in their homes had to be rescued by firefighters. Two people remain missing after a mudslide hit their home.
