With thousands of books to choose from at Edmonton Public Library (EPL), some are more popular than others and lead to hundreds of holds. Getting your hands on some of the most popular books of the year could keep you waiting on your toes for a bit. “For a physical collection, we aim for a hold ratio of five holds to every one copy, so that usually means a roughly three- to five-month wait,” Kilroy said. The top books on loan can be a “real mixed bag” between physical and digital holds, collection librarian Beth Kilfoy told CTV News Edmonton. There have been more than 10.8 million digital holds and more than 22.9 million digital loans all-time with EPL. In November, there were more than 5,100 holds for digital books. People can see the live feed of hold circulations of their OverDrive/Libby collection online. Audiobooks generally tend to have more nonfiction in it,” she said. With the rise of people listening to podcasts, Kilfoy said audio books are a format many people are willing to try.
