Mark Carney’s government tabled its second budget in the House of Commons on Thursday. Finance Minister Francois Philippe Champagne revealed $142.1 billion in new tax incentives, spending and other measures over the next five years. Among that spending is $25 million over two years for the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services to support the members of the Canadian Armed Forces, their families and local communities affected by the tragic incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright. Another $3 million will be invested to support the Wainwright Military Family Resource Centre. Four soldiers were killed at CFB Wainwright and another 39 injured as a result of a fire during a training exercise on Oct. 17. A total of 14 soldiers have since been released from hospital, according to the Department of National Defence. Four of the 25 soldiers still in hospital have been transferred to health centres in B.C. or Ontario so they can receive treatment closer to family. Investigations are still underway into the fire.
