The city says that several of its recreation centres are to reopen in the new year following maintenance and repairs. This includes the newly built Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre which will open on Jan. 27 in tandem with the reopening of the neighbouring Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre. Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre is scheduled to reopen on Saturday following routine maintenance to mechanical. The Mill Woods’ Aquatic Centre, which closed on Nov. 17 for routine maintenance, will reopen on Jan. 17. Routine maintenance to mechanical, electrical and structural systems includes draining pools and deep cleaning basins, grout and tile repairs, overhead and underwater light replacements/upgrades, painting, air handling and vent cleaning, inspection and servicing of pool mechanical systems such as anti-entrapment drains, steam room elements, filtration, disinfection, and circulation pumps, as well as filter tank coatings and filter media replacement. Following a fire in the pool’s sauna in November, Hardisty FItness and Leisure Centre is scheduled to reopen Feb. 13. Emergency repairs to the main water line and electrical transformer will see O’Leary Fitness and Leisure remain closed until Jan. 11, said the city. “The water main break caused the ground around the transformer to be unstable and EPCOR deemed it unsafe,” said the city in an email to CTV News Edmonton. Value members who frequent O’Leary will automatically have their memberships upgraded to Benefits Plus level during the closure. Bonnie Doon Leisure Centre will be closed for routine maintenance from Jan. 19 to March 20. The city said it typically cycles through facilities every two to two-and-a-half years to conduct routine maintenance in order to prevent long-term closures. “We also try to time them so that we are not impacting one area of the city too much,” said the city. “For example, Hardisty and Bonnie Doon are typically done on opposite years.”
