North Edmonton ‘problem property’ shut down due to drug activity: province

Alberta Sheriffs shut down a home in north Edmonton due to “persistent drug activity” after community complaints.

The home, located at 11259 159 Ave., will be closed for a year.

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit began to investigate the home in April of last year.

Sheriffs said there were “frequent short-term visits to the property, and visitors sleeping outside on neighbouring lawns and behaving erratically.”

The property is on a quiet crescent, which Sheriffs said made the problems more noticeable.

“It’s not a through road. It’s very quiet throughout the day. Typically, the individuals coming to these homes are here because they live here,” Andrew Albers of the Alberta Sheriffs SCAN unit told CTV News Edmonton at the scene.

“There was a high volume of transient individuals or homeless individuals with no real place to stay that was frequenting or living inside the property.”

“This is a clear example of how community reporting, combined with strong enforcement, makes a real difference,” said Mike Ellis, minister of public safety and emergency services. “When residents speak up, Alberta Sheriffs and the SCAN unit take action to restore safety and stability to neighbourhoods. Problem properties that put communities at risk will be held accountable.”

The home is to be vacated on Thursday.
