More than 180 privacy inquiries made to province amid voters’ data breach

Alberta’s privacy commissioner is making it easier for Albertans to find answers about whether their personal information was impacted after millions of voters’ data was made public last month.

On April 30, Elections Alberta informed The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (OIPC) of the alleged breach by a third party. On Thursday, Elections Alberta confirmed to CTV News that more than 560 people accessed the renegade voter database.

It believes 23 people were given full copies of the list, while another 545 accessed it through an online tool The Centurion Project made publicly available.

In the last week, the privacy commissioner received more than 180 inquiries with questions and concerns, the OIPC said in a news release Thursday. Due to the high volume, a FAQ website has been created to help reduce calls.

The page answers questions about how to know what personal information was included, how you can protect yourself from possible harms, how to access certain information and more.

It also confirms whether the OIPC is the right governing body to address people’s concerns, what the commissioner can or cannot do and others.

The province’s commission announced it would be launching an investigation on Thursday into the data breach.

Albertans are encouraged to look at the FAQ page before reaching out to the OIPC.
