Knack says Ottawa’s bail and sentencing bill ‘an important step’

Mayor Andrew Knack says Ottawa’s bill to help reduce crime is a welcome sign to address violent and repeat offenders in Edmonton.

Bill C-14 aims to implement measures targeting organized crime and violent extortion.

The city has seen at least 40 targeted extortion incidents in Project Gaslight, a series of arson targeting South Asian homebuilders in Edmonton.

“Extortion and organized criminal activity have created fear and uncertainty for too many families and business owners,” said Knack in a news release Wednesday.

“Stronger federal legislation provides important tools to help keep dangerous offenders off our streets and hold those responsible accountable.”

Federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser says the bill is in response to concerns from provinces, mayors and law enforcement – somethingKnack has been pushing for.

“Municipalities are bearing the consequences of organized crime, violent extortion and repeat offenders putting pressure on businesses, community organizations and neighbourhoods,” Knack said.

“The passage of Bill C-14 acknowledges those concerns and provides important tools to improve public safety.”

Knack says legislation must be accompanied by investments in crime prevention and supports that provide a pathway out of crime, such as addictions services, housing, community reintegration and more.
