The Habitat for Humanity Edmonton chapter is celebrating the completion of new affordable housing in the Windermere neighbourhood. The non-profit partnered with local builder Rohit Homes for seven new townhomes in the Glenridding Ravine. Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program provides support for prospective buyers with stable employment who are still facing financial barriers to entering the housing market. Homeowners buy the houses with no cash down payment and mortgage payments based on 50-per-cent of the home’s appraised fair market value. The buyers take on ongoing costs of ownership and build equity as time goes on. The program is “designed to help them progress into conventional market homeownership when they are ready,” a media release said. Rohit Homes is part of a real estate group which has operated in Edmonton since 1986 and since grown across Canada. Applications for the newly built homes are active online.
