Edmonton’s old Siemens LRT cars to be replaced by new models

Edmonton’s oldest LRT cars are nearing the end of the line. The city has signed a purchase agreement to replace the 37 Siemens U2 Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) that have served the city since the LRT first started operation in April 1978.

In February the city awarded a contract to Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) to buy 32 high-floor LRVs to serve the Capital and Metro lines.

On Friday, the city announced it would purchase an additional eight LRVs to support the Metro Line Northwest Phase 1 and Capital Line South Phase 1 expansion projects.

This brings the total number of LRVs to be purchased from HRC to 40.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to supply additional LRVs and remain committed to delivering high-quality vehicles on schedule to enhance the transportation convenience of Edmonton’s citizens,” CS Kim of HRC in a news release.

Design and manufacturing of the LRVs is scheduled to begin later this year, with delivery expected between 2029 and 2030.
