Edmonton weather: Snowy Friday and then some weekend warming

Cory Edel has your Edmonton forecast for Friday and the weekend.

Flurries and periods of snow are on the way for the Edmonton area through the day today.

It should start sometime this morning and continue right through into the evening hours.

I think anywhere between 1-5 cm of snow is likely on the ground by Saturday morning in the city.

We’re already seeing some accumulating snow from around Red Deer and south. That’s where MOST of the accumulation will be. Some areas around Red Deer/Olds/Drumheller/Coronation could pick up between 5-10 cm of snow.

It doesn’t look like the snow for Edmonton will stick around through to the end of the weekend.

Temperatures this weekend will depend on how much snow actually accumulates and how much melting we see on Saturday.

There’s a big push of warm air coming in for Sunday-Tuesday.

So...we’ll see temperatures steady in the -2 C range for most of today. Then... two or three degrees above 0 C Saturday afternoon.

Afternoon temperatures could be anywhere between 5 and 9 C on Sunday. I’m keeping my forecast at the low end of that range and going with a high of 6 C.

There’s also some uncertainty with just HOW warm we’ll get Monday. I’m going with a high of 9 C, but anywhere between 7 and 12 C is possible.

Bottom line:

We’ll get out first taste of snow in Edmonton today, but it won’t be the snow that sticks around for the rest of the winter.

Driving conditions will get worse throughout the day, and the evening commute will probably be a lot slower than the morning drive.

Highways south of Edmonton will have some heavier snow. Blowing snow shouldn’t be an issue, but there will be some icy sections.
