With Diwali – the Hindu festival of lights – approaching, the city is asking Edmontonians to celebrate safely after the last few years have seen fires breakout due to fireworks. Setting off fireworks is illegal in Edmonton unless a permit has been obtained, and can result in fines up to $10,000, as well as possible criminal charges. On Oct. 20, 2025, Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services responded to 22 firework-related complaints and 60 calls the following day. Three of the events resulted in significant grass fires. Illegal fireworks set off during that time in Mill Woods caused an estimated $175,000 in damages to a home. Three people were charged with arson in connection to the fire. Residents are encouraged to observe professional, permitted firework displays at Diwali events. The city has developed a community toolkit to help residents and organizations understand the rules of firework use, safety information and find celebrations with permitted firework shows. Firework permits can take up to 10 business days to process. Application requirements for event organizers can be found online. Those looking to plan events on city parkland are required to submit an event application at least six weeks before the scheduled event.
