VICTORIA - A team of creature hunters is on Vancouver Island looking for evidence of a serpent-like animal in Cameron Lake, about 180 kilometres northeast of Victoria.

Brigette Horvath of Nanaimo says she saw a strange creature swimming in the lake two years ago, bringing the total number of sightings of a serpent-like critter to at least a half dozen.

Members of the B.C. Scientific Cryptozoology Club, who specialize in looking for strange animals around the world, are launching a search of Cameron Lake for evidence of the animal.

Cryptozoology Club president John Kirk says he suspects the serpent is actually some kind of giant eel, but he wants to check the lake for himself.

Kirk says he's been to Africa in search of a jungle dinosaur and all over Okanagan Lake looking for the legendary Ogopogo.

Kirk says there are 41 lakes in British Columbia where people have reported seeing strange animals.
