TORONTO - New recommendations are being proposed on how much physical activity Canadian kids and adults should be getting on a regular basis.

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and ParticipAction are basing the recommendations on years of research analysis.

Existing guides say that children and youth should have at least 90 minutes of physical activity per day.

But the new recommendations are actually lowering the bar, saying kids aged five to 17 should get in at least 60 minutes of activity -- a full 30 minutes less than currently suggested.

ParticipAction's Kelly Murumets says they are not saying children need less physical activity, but because today's kids are so sedentary even 30 to 60 minutes a day can offer measurable benefits.

As for adults, the new recommendations call for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity activity, compared to current guidelines of 30 to 60 minutes daily.
