OTTAWA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people not to eat ready-to-eat roast beef and sandwiches sold at certain stores in Atlantic Canada because the product may be contaminated with Listeria.

The products are made by Les Salaisons Desco Inc. of Boisbriand, Que.

Most of the sandwiches were sold under the Mainline Market Best Picks brand at stores in Nova Scotia.

Those stores include: Mainline Market in Bridgewater; A&B Country Corner Convenience in Bridgewater and Middlewood; and Bordons in the Woods in Dalhousie.

The recall also includes sliced roast beef and fresh-made sandwiches sold at Old Time Meat Market in Riverview, N.B., Bonnar's Meat in Sydney, N.S., and R&D Retail Meats (formerly Chris Brothers) in Dartmouth, N.S.

All of the stores are voluntarily recalling the products and there have been no reported illnesses associated with these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled.

Eating food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, an illness that can cause high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

Infected pregnant women may experience a mild, flu-like illness. However, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth.

Maple Leaf (TSX:MFI) undertook a massive recall two months ago after Listeria detected at a Toronto facility was linked to outbreak of listeriosis that resulted in 20 deaths.

The inspection agency has compiled a detailed list of the products under recall on its website at www.inspection.gc.ca.
