Residents of Port Hope, Ont. are no longer being asked to conserve water as the municipality's supply has been restored.

On Monday morning, residents were warned that the supply was at risk of running dry.

Extremely cold temperatures caused an intake pipe at the Municipal Water Treatment Plant to freeze over the weekend.

At 7 a.m., the municipality warned that the reserve tank held only enough water to get the area through 10 hours of typical usage.

The municipality declared a state of emergency at 10:10 a.m. on Monday. Officials were not concerned about the quality of the water, the statement said, but the declaration let municipal staff access mutual aid and provincial support if needed.

Residents and businesses were asked to limit water consumption to what was required for drinking, minimum sanitation and food preparation.

While residents may return to their usual water consumption, the declaration of emergency will remain in effect overnight as a precautionary measure, according to Port Hope officials.

"The municipality wishes to thank everyone for their efforts to conserve water; the quick response from the public is appreciated," a statement read.
