The union representing Canada’s postal workers is filing a challenge in federal court as the decision to stamp out door-to-door delivery is still irking many of those affected.

Groups representing seniors and people with disabilities are joining the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in a bid to save home mail delivery.

Canada Post is set to introduce community mailboxes over the next five years to the one-third of Canadians who rely on door-to-door delivery. But some aren’t looking forward to the change.

“I still think it stinks,” says Gordon Moore, a Stratford, Ont., resident who says Canada Post isn’t considering senior citizens in their decision.

“Their excuse is everybody does stuff on the Internet,” he says. “But getting back to the seniors again, we’re not good at the Internet.”

Stratford is one of the first cities to make the transition, in a move that already has mail recipients and carriers alike protesting.

“In some areas you see three, four, five, six houses in a row with signs up,” says letter carrier Dan Pauly. “And that really means something."

CUPW president Denis Lemelin says those in Stratford aren’t alone.

"Everywhere in the country, we are canvassing people, and we have a lot of support," Lemelin told supporters at a news conference.

Mary Dawson, president of the local union, doesn’t think her city is set up to accommodate community boxes.

"The city of Stratford with our older neighbourhoods, they can't fit 600 community mailboxes in there without being an eyesore."

But despite complaints across the country, Canada Post says approximately 100,000 addresses will be switched to community mailboxes on Monday.

Canada Post also says it’s confident the switch “will withstand any and all legal scrutiny,” and it will ensure “no one is left behind.”

“The company also has in place a robust accommodations program based on best practices developed and utilized by municipalities, provinces and federal institutions. In addition, Canada Post spent months talking with human rights experts and regional and national organizations with extensive expertise in the field of accommodation to ensure the Corporation was taking the best approach,” Canada Post said in a statement.
