Five children were taken to hospital with minor injuries after a collision involving a school bus in Toronto.

The collision occurred around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, at the intersection of Richmond Street East and Berkeley Street, near the city’s downtown core.

Toronto Police Sgt. Neil Thorton told CP24 that a Ford Expedition SUV collided with the school bus, which then rolled over on its side.

Five children between the ages of five and seven were taken to hospital as a precaution, but they suffered minor injuries and were mostly “shaken up,” Thorton said.

Police said all the children involved were buckled up in their seats. A witness at the scene said the children on the bus appeared to have disabilities.

“The kids were crying, they were really stressed,” Eddie Letitchever, another witness who helped pull the kids from the bus, told CP24.

Ryan Bird, a spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board, said the five children involved attend Market Lane Junior and Senior Public School.  He said there were no visible injuries on the children and the driver of the school bus was taken to hospital as a precaution as well.

The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and appears to be uninjured, police said.

Police said it’s too early to determine exactly how the collision occurred, but they are hoping that video from surveillance cameras in the area may help their investigation.
