Calgary police say an off-duty officer has been charged with impaired driving after a traffic stop in the city's southeast.

Police received reports of a potentially impaired driver around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.

They say they responded to the call, located the vehicle and arrested the driver.

Timothy Callaghan, a six-year constable with the Calgary Police Service, has been charged with one count of impaired driving.

They say he is on an unrelated leave of absence.

Police say they have released the information in the interest of transparency, but noted he is afforded the right of a fair trial and will receive appropriate supports from the service during the court process.
