A school is rallying to help a young Manitoba boy, after doctors were forced to amputate his leg following a blood infection.
David Stevenson, 9, became sick in September with doctors pinning his symptoms on Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) – a bloodstream infection.
The infection is thought to have been started by an innocuous cut on his knee.
His parents say David was calm despite the prospect of losing his leg.
"We talked to him and explained everything about why it needs to be removed and after that, he was ok," his father Daniel Stevenson told CTV Winnipeg. "And he was perfectly calm and he said, 'OK, I'm ready. Let's go.'"
His family are forced to drive from their community of Selkirk to Winnipeg on a weekly basis so Daniel can continue receiving treatment.
With the gas bill eating away at the family's savings, Daniel's friends have held a series of fundraisers to help pay the bills.
His friends Leam Morin and Madi Frommlet teamed up to co-ordinate the fundraising efforts, staging a bake sale and convincing classmates to empty their piggy banks.
"I said, ‘Do you want to help me collect some money for David?’ and she's like ‘Sure, we'll start tomorrow’," Morin said.
Altogether, they’ve raised more than $1,000.
The Stevensons say they’re overwhelmed by the support from David’s friends.
"I can't thank them enough for everything that they're doing. They really touched my heart and I'm happy that my son has friends like this," David said.
