SURREY, Canada -- British Columbia's police watchdog says an off-duty officer may have committed an offence during a car accident that killed a Fraser Valley teenager.
Fourteen-year-old Marcus Larabie was longboarding in Abbotsford on the evening of Dec. 26, 2014 when a car collided with him; he later died in hospital.
Abbotsford police identified the driver as an off-duty member of its department who remained at the scene.
The Independent Investigations Office says in a news release that the acting chief civilian investigator has now reviewed the file and forwarded a report to B.C.'s Criminal Justice Branch.
IIO spokeswoman Kellie Kilpatrick says the report is the first referral of an off-duty officer to prosecutors and it wants them to consider an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The watchdog says prosecutors must consider whether there's a substantial likelihood of conviction and if a laying charges is in the public interest.
