A Surrey, B.C., mother has been charged with second-degree murder after her eight-year-old daughter's body was found in the trunk of a car.

Surrey RCMP officers discovered the body shortly after noon local time Wednesday after responding to calls about a car partially in a ditch in the city's south end.

On Thursday, the force's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) identified the victim as Teagan Batstone.

The girl’s grieving father, posted a picture of the girl to Twitter.

On Wednesday, Sgt. Jennifer Pound said the child did not die at the scene.

"We believe that the child was transported here," Pound told CTV Vancouver. "We don’t have a specific timeline on when the death occurred."

The cause of death has yet to be determined. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Lisa Batstone, 41, is charged with second-degree murder. She is scheduled to appear in a Surrey court later Thursday.

Batstone does not have any other children, police said in a news release.
