CAPE SABLE ISLAND, N.S. -- Police are on the lookout for efforts to sell over two tonnes of lobster swiped from a Cape Sable Island storage pound earlier this week.
RCMP Const. Jennifer Botham says 48 crates of the valuable crustaceans, or about 2,200 kilograms, were snatched from one of the community's lobster pens sometime overnight on Tuesday.
At current market prices of about $6.25, that's roughly $30,000 worth of seafood that may be circulating illegally.
Botham says officers are aware the lobsters have a limited shelf life, which puts pressure on the thieves to attempt a rapid sale of the pilfered catch.
The constable says she's asking the public to watch out for people trying to sell an unusually large number of the lobster.
"Watch for people who are trying to move a large quantity," she said.
"We're talking a lot of lobster to try and keep alive."
She says there are between 15 to 20 lobster pounds in the Cape Sable Island and the theft is having a significant effect on the community.
"It's their livelihood in that area. It's the industry there," she said.
