OTTAWA - Canada is poised to announce further sanctions against North Korea.
The Canadian Press has learned that Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon is planning to outline the new measures Thursday.
A government official said Cannon is also expected to downgrade Canada's already limited diplomatic relations with the rogue nuclear state.
Earlier this year, Canada announced enhanced restrictions on trade, investment and other bilateral relations with North Korea -- as well as suspending high-level visits by its officials.
Those measures followed the sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean navy ship, which claimed the lives of 46 sailors.
Three experts from the Canadian navy joined the multinational team that investigated the incident, and concluded the warship was sunk by a North Korean torpedo.
There were no breakthroughs in two days of talks this week between North and South Korea over reuniting families separated by the 1950-53 war, but the two sides agreed to meet again next month.
