Parks Canada is reminding campers in Banff National Park to properly store food away as a visitor faces charges for failing to store their belongings. The federal agency said on social media that staff at Rampart Creek Campground learned on Tuesday a black bear had obtained food that was kept beside a camper’s tent in a bag marketed as bear-resistant. The bear returned to the tent again when it was left unoccupied. Parks Canada issued a bear warning for the area. “When camping in Banff National Park, all scented items, including food and hygiene products must be stored in a vehicle or in the bear-proof storage locks provided to prevent wildlife from accessing food,” the federal agency said. Bears that become conditioned to human food and associate humans with food rarely survive in the long-term, the agency said, adding the animals can often end up in conflicts that result in bears being relocated or euthanized to ensure public safety. Parks Canada continues to monitor the area for continued bear activity.
