A CD stuck in the player of a borrowed van turned into musical inspiration for jazz saxophonist Cory Weeds. “We could either sit in silence, or we could listen to the CD that was stuck in (bandmate Chris Hazelton’s dad’s) CD player in the van,” Weeds told CTV News. “So, we chose the stuck CD in the van, and it was Huey Lewis & The News’s Greatest Hits.” That album, on repeat during a road trip from Kansas City to St. Louis, became fodder for Weeds’ new album, Hip to be Square—Plays Huey Lewis & The News. The Vancouver-based Weeds and his band will perform those 1980s hits Friday, Nov. 6 at The Ironwood Stage and Grill as part of the JazzYYC Canadian Jazz Festival. “You’re going to see a lot of smiles and we’re going to have some fun stage banter,” Weeds said. “It’s going to be fun talking to the audience about who recognizes the tunes and who doesn’t and why they recognize the tunes.”
