A trailer is out for a new Netflix series shot in the Calgary area. The Abandons is a western starring Lena Headey of Game of Thrones fame and Gillian Anderson, famous for her role in The X-Files. In The Abandons, they play mothers in a battle of the haves and have-nots. The show is set in Oregon but was filmed around Calgary in 2024. It premieres Dec. 4. Another made-in-Calgary production, the movie Die My Love, opens in theatres worldwide on Friday. Die My Love stars Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence and Twilight star Robert Pattinson. The black comedy-drama tells the story of a couple who relocate from New York to Montana, where the new mom of the duo struggles with postpartum depression and feelings of isolation in her new home. The film premiered at Cannes in May, where it was nominated for the Palme D’Or. Lawrence talked about filming in Calgary with CTV’s Etalk. “I had a toddler there, so I did a lot of exploring,” she said. “I went to the zoo, I went to the science museum (Telus Spark) that has that crazy slide outdoors -- and the Saddledome was a big part of conversation. “But when I wrapped (production) – sometimes when I wrap a movie I get a little bit of PTSD. “It’s hard to describe but I won’t want to look at pictures from that time for like a few months -- but somebody had given my son a book called, Goodnight Calgary and every single night, he would want me to read – it was like, ‘Goodnight Saddledome – it was just like the whole thing (city) over and over again.” The book Lawrence was referencing may have been Night-Night Calgary, a children’s book by British author Kathering Sully. “Say goodnight and wish sweet dreams to Calgary’s most iconic sights and landmarks, including Peace Bridge, Calgary Tower, Olympic Park, and many more,” says the Raincoast Distribution Group’s promotional page for the book.
