Jessica Kondas grew up in the northwest Calgary community of Valleyridge and always loved the game of hockey, but she never thought she’d have the opportunity to play professionally. That all changed in the 2023-24 hockey season when the PWHL started up. Three years later, the league is thriving and the Toronto Sceptres defenceman will lace up to play a game at the Saddledome on Wednesday night for a match as the PWHL Takeover Tour stops in Calgary this week. “Growing up here, I didn’t really know much about the women’s game,” she said. “I played boys’ hockey and didn’t know much until I went to high school about the girls’ game.” “It’s super surreal and I’m excited about it.” Kondas isn’t the only local player suiting up for Wednesday’s game — Sarah Wozniewicz of the Ottawa Charge says playing in front of her hometown crowd is a huge deal for her. “It’s going to be a lot of emotions,” the forward said of playing professionally at home. “All my friends and family (will be) there. Playing in the city you grew up (in) is something you dream of and that’s what I get to do tomorrow night. It’s going to be so much fun.” Hundreds of fans turned up at WinSport to watch both teams play and get autographs. For many, the PWHL has paved the way for them hopefully play professionally. “I appreciate it so much,” said nine-year-old Tyler Swelin. “I am so excited…I’ll try really hard for one day to get to the PWHL and maybe get to a special team.” “I really appreciate how they have made this possible for girls,” said 10-year-old Juliet Yarmoloy. Inspiring the next generation of hockey players is what it’s all about for these players, paving the way for others to have a chance to keep playing the game they love. “Today seeing all the little girls asking for your signature, it’s super cute,” Wozniewicz said. “I wish it was something I had when I was growing up, but now it’s awesome that little girls can look up to us and have something to dream of.” Kondas also noted being back at home to spend time with family and have a home-cooked meal was another benefit of the tour. “I got home last night, which was awesome. Tonight, I have another family dinner and … I have a new niece that I get to meet, so that’s super exciting,” she said. Puck drop for Wednesday’s game is 7:30 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
