Rainfall warnings issued for southern Alberta with up to 70 mm possible in some communities

An intense thunderstorm Sunday night caused significant damage for portions of Calgary and area.

Heavy rain, large-sized hail and strong wind impacted residents, especially in the northern portion of Calgary.

Power was knocked out in some north Calgary communities including Winston Heights, Mountainview, Thorncliffe and Highwood.

The storm also downed trees, shredded foliage and caused water to pool on a number of Calgary roadways as storm drains became clogged with hailstones and debris.

More rain is expected to fall over southern Alberta on Monday, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to issue rainfall warnings along the foothills, through Calgary, north of Olds, south of Claresholm and as far east as Brooks.

In their advisory, the national weather agency explained, “Heavy rain has developed near Calgary and will expand towards Pincher Creek this morning. Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 millimetres is expected.”

Calgary is expecting around 20 to 30 millimetres of rain, with the heaviest rainfall totals likely in the southwest corner of the province.

Cooler air funneling south through Alberta will keep daytime highs far below seasonal on Monday, with Calgary forecasting a peak temperature of 13 C compared to 23 C for the normal value.

It should warm up to 21 C by Wednesday, with more rain expected Thursday.
