Measles case in Calgary Zone prompts AHS to issue public alert

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a public alert warning of a confirmed measles case in the Calgary Zone that could potentially have put others at risk.

AHS has released information on a number of venues the infected person visited and the time they were there, saying anyone in the venue at that time may have been exposed to measles.

This includes:

April 6, 2025

• Canmore - Save-On-Foods
• 950 Railway Ave. #2, Canmore AB
• Exposure time period: Approx. 5 a.m. – 3 p.m.

April 7-10, 2025

• Calgary – Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics
• 5915 1a St. SW, Calgary AB
• Exposure time period: Approx. 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

April 11, 2025

• Banff – Lux Cinema
• 229 Bear St. Banff AB
• Exposure time period: 4 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.

April 11, 2025

• Banff – Fairmont Banff Springs – Bowl Valley Five Pin & Pints
• 405 Spray Ave. Banff AB
• Exposure time period: 6:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Anyone who attended these locations at these times who was born in or after 1970, and has less than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine is at risk of developing measles.

AHS says those at high risk are “strongly encouraged” to review their immunization records and monitor themselves for symptoms.

Measles symptoms include:

• Fever of 38.3 C or higher;
• Cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; and
• A rash that appears three to seven days after fever starts, usually beginning behind the ears and on the face and spreading down to the body and then to the arms and legs. The rash appears red and blotchy on lighter skin colours. On darker skin colours, it can appear purple or darker than the skin around it, or it might be hard to see.

If symptoms of measles develop, you’re advised to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider, including a family physician clinic or pharmacy.

Confirmed Alberta cases

As of Tuesday, Alberta is reporting 77 confirmed cases of measles in the province.

Most are in the central zone (41) while the Calgary zone has four.

The provincial data indicates the vast majority of the cases (70) are in people aged 18 or younger.

The latest data on immunization status, from April 5, shows 30 of the confirmed cases from that time were unimmunized while five only had one of the two shots.

The chart does not include how many confirmed cases there were at that same time, but after reaching out the province, they said there were 35.

It means 100 per cent of the cases at that time were people who had not been fully vaccinated.
