Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man ended up in hospital following his arrest in Calgary earlier this month. The incident occurred the evening of June 17, in the northwest community of Huntington Hills. According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the man was arrested around 5 p.m. when he came out of a home on police orders. Police had “surrounded the property,” and neighbours had been told “to stay inside” while the incident unfolded. ASIRT says police arrived with the man at processing around 5:30 p.m., and it was there they “called for medical help after observing signs that the man was in physical distress.” “Police removed the man’s handcuffs and put them back on with his hands in front of his body,” ASIRT said in a release issued Monday morning. “Staff at the facility provided medical care before EMS arrived and paramedics took over.” According to ASIRT, the man was taken to hospital in serious condition, and he remains there, now stable.
