Lunchbox Theatre moving to CSpace Marda Loop for 52nd season

Lunchbox Theatre is getting a new home -- and neighbourhood.

The theatre, which was founded in 1975 “to provide live theatre during the lunch hour to downtown shoppers and workers” is relocating for its 52nd season to CSpace in Marda Loop.

CSpace is an artists hub located in the old King Edward School location on 29 Street S.W. Lunchbox shows will be performed in the CSpace Studio Theatre, a 96 seat venue.

“We’re so excited to move to CSpace. To be surrounded by a community of artists in a neighbourhood that has been so welcoming and enthusiastic about the theatre we make is a dream come true,” said Lunchbox artistic director Bronwyn Steinberg in a media release. “We can’t wait for Marda Loop to experience our 52nd Season, right in their backyard.”

CSpace president and CEO Deeter Schurig said the beloved theatre company -- the last one in Canada to offer lunchtime theatre -- is a welcome addition to the bustling scene at CSpace.

“As part of Calgary’s theatre community for more than 50 years, it’s wonderful to welcome Lunchbox Theatre to CSpace Marda Loop for their 2026–27 Season,” said Schurig. “We look forward to providing accessible space where their artists and audiences can connect through live theatre and enliven our community.”

The company also released its 2026-27 season lineup, which consists of five one-act plays including a live radio play edition of A Christmas Carol.

In October, Lunchbox is bringing back Ribstone, Christopher Hunt’s one-person show that was a smash hit when it was presented as part of the 2026 High Performance Rodeo. It’s an intimate personal story about Hunt’s family’s Alberta ranching roots told through music and storytelling.

In December, A Christmas Carol Radio Play Live takes over the stage at CSpace in an adaptation by Steinberg.

Three actors will tell the story about a radio station celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Dickens classic.

“I’ve wanted to do this show for a long time,” said Steinberg. “Audiences have been asking for another radio play, and A Christmas Carol is the perfect story for the medium.”

Award-winning actress, director and playwright Michelle Thrush presents Inner Elder, another High Performance Rodeo smash hit that won a Betty Mitchell Award in 2018 for Thrush’s performance, which tells the autobiographical story of an Indigenous artist searching for Indigenous representation in pop culture that isn’t a stereotype, only to find success playing stereotypes.

“To call this show funny is an understatement. It’s uproarious,” said Steinberg. “It’s a beautiful examination of the relationship between Canadian and Indigenous cultures.”

In March, Oh Mother!, Rebekkah Ogden’s story about wanting to be a painter in a family of 12 children -- during which Ogden will paint an audience member’s portrait while performing the show.

The final show of the season is Marv and Eve, a comedy about two 70something best friends whose half-century long friendship transforms on a fishing expedition.

“There’s so much feeling in this show,” says Steinberg. “It’s so affecting. Whether you’re laughing or crying, you’ll be rooting for both Marv and Ev throughout.”
