A Lethbridge man had his motorcycle seized by police and faces significant fines after he was caught driving at 150 km/h in the city last month. The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) caught the 30-year-old man while he was travelling eastbound with a group of motorcycles on Scenic Drive South on June 27. “The officer continued to monitor the group as they stopped for a red light at 43 Street,” LPS said in a news release. “When the light turned green, the group accelerated rapidly. As the officer attempted to catch up to the lead motorcycle, another rider overtook the officer at a speed exceeding 150 km/h, approximately 90 km/h over the posted speed limit.” The officer pulled over that motorcyclist and he was given several tickets for careless driving, speeding, stunting and racing without a permit. In addition, the man’s motorcycle was towed and his licence plate was seized. LPS says the arrest was part of a targeted sting on traffic enforcement on Scenic Drive. The service says 70 other tickets were handed out to drivers during the initiative. Some of those violations included two vehicles towed for equipment issues, three vehicles towed for improper insurance and one immediate roadside sanction. “The public is encouraged to report violations and ongoing high-risk driving behaviour by calling 403-328-4444,” LPS said “Public reports and traffic data analysis help guide enforcement priorities and police deployment.”
