Hit-and-run involving child still under investigation: RCMP

Airdrie RCMP need your help to identify a suspect in a hit and run that injured a 6-year-old boy. Mark Villani reports.

Airdrie RCMP said investigation continues into a March 12 incident where a six-year-old child was struck in a hit-and-run incident.

At 5:43 p.m. that day, officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run on Cobblestone Boulevard involving a gold Acura SUV.

At the time, two children were shoveling snow off the sidewalk with their mother when one of the children was struck by the vehicle after it lost control and drove onto the sidewalk.

Police said the SUV also hit a tree before fleeing southbound on Cobblestone Boulevard.

Police said they believe two people were inside the vehicle, a female driver and a male passenger.

The female is described as between 16 and 20 years old, with medium-coloured skin. She was wearing a white toque.

Police believe the male is between 16 and 18 years old.

Airdrie RCMP public information officer Cpl. Thomas Howell said Sunday in an interview with CTV that any time a child is involved in a collision, it’s alarming.

“Failing to stop at the scene of a collision or of an accident is a criminal code offense, and you can be charged for that,” Howell said. “But putting aside that, you hit someone -- you’ve hit a child.

“It’s alarming that they didn’t stop and make sure that the child was all right.”

Howell said that luckily, the child wasn’t seriously injured.

“We’re talking about minor injuries, no need for long-term hospitalization or anything like that,” he said.

Howell said the police did get a license plate and were in the process of contacting the registered owner.

“We don’t know at this point who was driving and whether or not the registered owner was aware of it,” he added.
