Crown prosecutors will not seek an adult sentence for a male convicted of manslaughter in the death of a young man more than two years ago. Danillo Canales Glenn was stabbed to death at a basketball court in the southeast Calgary community of Copperfield on Sept. 5, 2023. The victim was 18 years old when he was pepper sprayed, assaulted and stabbed several times at the outdoor court. The 18-year-old offender cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because he was 16 years old at the time of the killing. He and his older brother were both charged with second-degree murder, but the teen was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter in December. Crown prosecutors had considered seeking an adult sentence but, on Monday informed the court they would not pursue the option, following a post-conviction assessment. The report determined the teen was at a moderate risk to reoffend and to reoffend violently. The report’s author, Dr. Ryan Day, a clinical and forensic psychologist, testified Monday to ongoing concerns with the offender, including his lack of empathy and remorse to victims of previous crimes including a violent robbery he was involved in Quebec as a youth that Day described as being “eerily similar” to the Copperfield stabbing. He cited the youth continued to always carry a knife, despite having a ban on weapons. Day indicated that while he does not have a learning disability, he “struggles from a cognitive standpoint,” with reading and spelling abilities assessed at a Grade 6 and Grade 8 level, respectively. Day recommended formal education, structured activities and counselling would be beneficial for his rehabilitation. The Crown is seeking two years with no credit for time already served. The courtroom gallery was packed full Monday for the sentencing hearing, with the family of the victim and the offender both in attendance. The older brother charged in the killing, who was 18 years old at time, will go to trial in November and can’t be identified as it would identify his younger brother.
