City of Calgary civic census is returning for 2028

A biennial City of Calgary civic census will be reinstated for 2028.

City council approved the move Tuesday.

In a release, the city said the civic census will involve “the official count of homes and the people who are living in these homes.”

The city said this will be done “through online and door-to-door physical collection and recording of data.”

Calgary stopped conducting a civic census in 2020, “relying on other data sources” instead.

This was found to “not sufficiently replace the value of the civic census.”

Tuesday’s release said with Calgary seeing rapid growth, the data a civic census is able to provide will be critical.

Civic census information may fuel:

• the city’s planning of services such as roads, transit, recreation and water;
• school boards’ enrolment predictions and decisions on future schools; and
• the province’s determining per capita grant allocations where available.
