The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is requiring all visitors hoping to spot some birds to take extra precautions after federal officials confirmed the presence of avian flu within the Calgary area. A note shared to social media said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency had confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza within 200 kilometres of the zoo. “Out of an abundance of caution,” the zoo said it has set up foot baths outside its bird exhibits to protect the health and well-being of its animals. That includes the Larry Ruskin Penguin Plunge, the Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary and African Rainforest Aviary. All staff, volunteers, visitors and contractors will have to use them before entering the spaces, the post said. Birds will continue to have outdoor access, weather permitting, where appropriate, the zoo said.
