Calgary was recertified as a bird-friendly city on Thursday. Nature Canada made the announcement, making Calgary the first Canadian city to be re-certified twice. It was named a bird-friendly city in 2021, then re-certified in 2023 at an intermediate level. Thursday it received the same designation. "Bird Friendly Calgary is excited to be the first city in Canada to be certified for a third time," Bird Friendly Calgary posted on its Facebook page. “While this is fantastic news and speaks to the work that is being done by city council, administration and citizens in Calgary, we still have work to do! Our evaluation this time around is almost identical to two years ago, let’s see if we can’t get more work done for the next time around!” Nature Canada introduced the designation of bird-friendly cities as a way of acknowledging municipalities across the country that support birds throughout their life cycle -- because how birds are doing in a given environment is usually an indication of how the people are doing as well. "A bird-friendly status for Calgary indicates that City of Calgary Council, administration and citizens take pride in creating and maintaining a healthy environment for everyone that calls Calgary their home, feathered or not," Bird Friendly Calgary said in a release.
