Calgary police officers will travel to Vancouver to help out during FIFA World Cup

Calgary police officers will head to Vancouver, B.C., later this year to support policing efforts during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Canada is hosting the World Cup alongside Mexico and the United States.

BC Place Stadium will be host seven of the 13 Canadian matches between June 11 and July 19 – the remaining matches will be held in Toronto.

The Calgary Police Service says they cannot, for “operational security reasons,” disclose the number of officers that will attend.

“We are working closely with the Vancouver Police Department on planning and co-ordination of resources for the event,” police said in a statement.

“The members of the Vancouver Police Department have previously assisted the CPS with policing duties at major events hosted in Alberta, including the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in 2025, and the World Petroleum Congress in Calgary in 2023.

“When we are in a position to assist another agency, planning and deployment is done carefully and for a limited period of time to ensure there is no impact to public safety in Calgary.

“We are confident this deployment will not negatively impact our ability to respond to calls for service in Calgary.”

It’s not known how much money the assistance will cost, but CPS says a “cost recovery agreement is in place,”

The Vancouver Police Department said in a statement that the cost will come out of the budget “provided by the FIFA host city” – not their policing budget.
