Calgary Catholic School Division reaches agreement with striking support staff

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says nine locals have agreements with their employers to end a strike by education support workers.

Calgary’s two largest school boards have struck a deal with school support staff to end their ongoing strike.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the union representing the workers, said it has accepted a tentative agreement from the Calgary Catholic School District.

A ratifying vote will take place over the next two days, paving the way for CCSD employees to return to work Monday.

Support staff from the Calgary Board of Education are also set to return to work as soon as Friday.

Union members voted 92 percent in favour of accepting a deal with the CBE.

Details from deals reached have not been shared, only that wages have been increased and agreements will last until August 2028.

Strikes, sparked by low wages and working conditions, spread to nine school divisions across the province last month.

In Calgary, the strikes involved about 800 maintenance and custodial employees at CBE and another 350 workers with CCSD.

All nine striking school divisions now have at least a tentative deal.
