A unique, interactive event was held at Bow Valley College’s production hub facility Friday. It was called “YYC Soundscapes: In Tune with Motion.” As images of Calgary were shown, three jazz musicians improvised music based on what they saw. The musicians were Chris Tauchner, a pianist for the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, bass player Jeff Gammon, a member of the Esteban Herrera Trio and drummer Afo Fapujuwo, who has performed at numerous festivals including the Montreal International Jazz Festival and Osheaga. “We have access to motion capture technology and massive soundstage with volume wool. So we wanted to take that virtual production and motion capture technology into that theme of being in tune,” said Katlyn Sproule, Bow Valley College community engagement lead. “I think it’s a great opportunity to learn a little bit about the technology, plus having fun and jamming with jazz,” said Nikolas Florez, a virtual production studio specialist. The event was held in partnership with the National Music Centre and Design Week Calgary.
