The pet store chain that includes PJ’s Pets and Pets Unlimited has announced it will be closing 27 locations across Canada.

"We are saddened to say that we are closing our doors after almost 50 years of serving the pet community across Canada," Brad Hamilton, vice-president of PJ's Pets, said in a statement.

"Our business was able to thrive for so many years as a result of our loyal associates and amazing customers.”

Gordon Brothers Group, the company that owns PJ’s Pets, announced the closures on Friday.

The company operates a total of 39 stores across the country, including Petculture, Pets Unlimited and Oliver and Pets Co.

Five stores are going out of business in British Columbia and 11 stores will be closing down across Ontario. Another 11 stores will be ceasing operations across the Atlantic provinces.

Gordon Brothers did not give a reason for the closures.

Affected stores are offering sales of up to 30 per cent on all on food, supplies and accessories.

Stores began to wind down operations on April 22.
